Magnetic Leadership
“Will the best employees hire you?”
For the first time in the history of work, business success depends on discretionary effort: creativity, courage, flexibility, and personable experiences for every customer. If employees don’t want to give you discretionary effort, they won’t… and you can’t fire them if they don’t. They “hire” leaders whose careers depend on discretionary effort and they “fire” leaders who attempt only ordinary work.
There are precious few Magnetic Leaders and the success of every business depends on them more every day. These are not “born-leaders,” geniuses, or unusually charming corporate poster children. Rather, Magnetic Leaders are disciplined individuals who are determined to accomplish great things as a result of going to work. In every case they are excellent managers, and in every case they consistently apply five ancient principles:
- Pursue What You Cannot Do: Magnetic Leaders commit themselves to goals that are unachievable apart from extraordinary effort.
- Make The Invisible Visible: Magnetic Leaders perform the way they want their teams to perform and they convert vision and strategy into metrics that are literally on the wall.
- Invest In The Best: Rather than giving most of their time to the squeaky wheels, Magnetic Leaders give their best time and resources to their best people, partners, processes, and policies.
- Weed The Garden: After a careful look into, and a strong attempt to fix, the cause of poorly performing people, partners, processes, and policies, Magnetic Leaders get rid of what doesn’t add value.
- Rest and Remember Regularly: Magnetic Leaders have the discipline to stop work on a regular, predictable, and frequent basis and to color today by what the team accomplished yesterday.
